Artist: Damnation Army
   Title: Tyrant
   Label: Mascot Records

Damnation Army is the brainchild of Sweden’s Thomas Nyholm (also known as NightSpawn when the need arises), a whole band by himself as Thomas plays guitars, bass, and drums and also does the vocals all on his own throughout the entire album.

Nyholm can take solace in the fact that Damnation Army, and in particular this album, is all his work and that he only himself to answer too.

The album mixed various hardcore sounds such as death metal, thrash and extreme metal with just a touch of melody, while at its core it’s as dark as they come.

The album opens up with ‘To Deaths Arms’ and straight away the dark dejected tones are unleashed, but at breakneck speed the unrelenting guitar riffs lead the way for Nyholm’s dark demonic vocals to take over.

The dark theme is current throughout the entire album with only slight deviations into different genres.  Highlights on the album must be the intense ‘Soldier of the Damned’ with its insatiable riffs, the stoner sounds of ‘Dalia’, and the down trodden guitars of ‘A Dagger Right In Your Heart’.

The entire album is a mix of hardcore metal with a fixation on the macabre.  The whole one man band thing is a tribute to Nyholm’s skill as a musician, but to bring the whole thing to a live audience might pose a problem.  Mainly because Nyholm would have to find musicians that share his passion and dedication for the Damnation Army sound and his passion for the dark side of music.  I fear these might be a little hard to find, but you never know, we might get to see Damnation Army live on day.
