Unfortunately
I saw the video of this single before I'd actually had a chance to
listen to the CD. Anyone who has seen that video will know exactly why
I'm going to make this next comment …WHAT THE **** ARE THEY PLAYING AT
?!? If you haven't already caught the video then you're going to have to
hunt it down because it is one of the most Spinal Tap moments I have
seen in a long time. This band really do like to tread a fine line don't
they?
But you know what, underneath all that ridiculous behaviour they really
do wear you down and break down your defences … why? Because the songs
they put out are so very different to what we are having shoved in our
face these days. They take you back to a time when music was fun and
bands had the talent to called carry off such songs live as opposed to
using backing tapes and dodgy effects.
'Growing on Me' reminds me a bit like Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers,
that is until Justin starts going off the scale in the chorus. First
time you hear it you'll not be convinced, first time you see THAT video
you'll be even less convinced and you'll probably wet yourself laughing
at the same time. Well if that happens put the CD to one side, wait a
week then give it another listen. I'd be very surprised if you don't
change your mind, just like I did.
OK, so Justin's high pitched notes sometimes take a bit of getting used
to but this song, and this band really do keep 'growing on me' (pardon
the pun). The second track on the single is 'How Dare You Call This
Love'. Slower than the last song, I suppose this is probably as close as
this band will get to a rock ballad. Timed like a Queen classic it will
certainly appeal to the older classic rockers out there.
Last but certainly not least we have 'Bareback'. Now I distinctly
remember falling in love with this song when I heard the band play it
live in concert. AC/DC are one of my top 5 favourite bands of all time
and the guitar playing on this is absolutely spot on. My god this is
what I like to hear, a good solid drum beat, some fabulous guitar
playing with head nodding riffs that make you wanna take the Angus pose
and strut your stuff. It's songs like this that really pop my cork and
make me glad I'm a rocker through and through. Totally instrumental but
who cares, this little beauty won me over from the first listen.
A lot of message boards around the net have been in deep discussion
about this band and people are still undecided just what to make of
them. For me they are a good time that deliver so many good tunes on CD
you simply can't ignore them. I'll be one of those saddo's rushing to
the CD shop to buy the new album the morning it is first released. I've
been around long enough to know what I like and this is it. Good time
rock n roll with catchy tunes that you can dance along to as well as
sing along to.
Thank you lads, for bringing a bit of sparkle back into the rock world
that had become so tainted and jaded. You deserve all the festival slots
you will be playing and all the praise those old enough to remember the
good times, as well as the bad times for rock, are heaping on you. We
love ya to bits, just keep on rockin' and let's hope this crazy party
never stops.
