Artist: Deep Black Sees
   Title: Inside Outside
   Label: Rising Records

This is the debut mainstream (after their 2007 EP, 'Hypocrisy') release for this Italian progressive rock group.  Having been invited by Grammy-nominated producer Sylvia Massey (who has worked with Tool, REM and System Of A Down) to record their album at her Radiostar Studio in California.  The band has been together since they were just twelve/thirteen years old in 2003, so have spent their formative years working towards this release.

This five-piece hare the vocal work between two of the band members who also share the guitar work, whereas the keyboardist is their backing vocalist.  The other, non-vocal members take drums and bass respectively.

Their honest professionalism flows through each of the songs, with their less progressive and more melodic metal running throughout them.  This is the perfect accompaniment to a lazy evening relaxing either on your own or with a partner, and is enhanced by the sophoric effects of the lead vocalists.

None of the instrumental work is obscenely heavy or cacophonous, but melds together in a neat frame of relaxation not found in many others’ works.  They don’t really count as prog metal, more a softer-metal/rock that is rare in today’s fast and hard generic metal.  This nice, soft album is a beaut to listen to, with guitar solos flowing in and out amongst the river that is the album.

A favourite track at the moment is 'I Liked That', a slow, well-written/performed piece of melodic metal that isn’t formulaic or constrained, but fits in well with the ethos of the band.  'Ashes From My Eyes' is distinctively different, melding the harder, coarser growls of the second vocalist with the softer, more evenly toned vocalist and instrumental. This song feels in essence like a battle of the melodic and death metal and it fits perfectly in with their progressive stance.  I could listen to these guys all day and all night and not get bored, and I’m sure that this is the intention after all.
