2008 is a huge year for the German Thrash Metal godfathers Destruction, not only is it the bands 25th year anniversary, but this is also the year the band launch their massive Metal assault that is their new opus ‘D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N’, backed by a massive tour in support of it's release. This new album is Destruction all the way with Schmier at the helm leading the attack on vocals and bass, with the now familiar rear guard of Mike Siffringer and Marc Reign. The album get's underway with the title track ‘Devolution’, this one begins with the gentlest of starts before the might that is Schmier and the rest of the band explode onto the scene in typical Destruction style in an all-out Thrash attack that will excite even the hardest of Thrash fans. This album is a little darker than previous albums and does the band no harm at all as Thrash is supposed to be dark, moody and fast as hell and this album is just that. Things continue with ‘Elevator To Hell’ with Reign getting this off to a thunderous start before Schmier and Siffringer make their mark on the track with a power onslaught that defies explanation, such is the force of all three band members have when they combine with such passion and force for the music they make. There is no denying that this is a true Thrash Metal album as the band go all out to smash everything they’ve ever done with in one fell swoop with this truly massive album. This is a band that can combine speed and melody in a quite unique style that has made them such a success in the genre and the onslaught continues with the massive ‘Vicious Circle - The 7 Seven Deadly Sins’, which gets underway with a choral intro before the might of Siffringer is unleashed with a truly awesome six string attack, backed by Schmier’s and Reign’s ball busting heavy bass and drums. This is Thrash as it should be, big loud and remarkably fast but yet still listenable. There really is no compromise with this album, it's Thrash all the way with monsters like ‘Offenders Of The Throne’ and the fantastic ‘Last Desperate Scream’, a moss pit monster if ever there was one. Any idiot can play fast and loud but to keep it melodic is a true test of musicianship and the trio show how it should be done with this true Thrash masterclass. As the album continues on it's rampaging path with the spine busting ‘Urge (The Greed Of Gain)’, a absolute head-bangers delight. This song will put muscles on your neck like a bull if you go all out on this one. As I said at the beginning this a no holds barred Thrash album that is propelled at break neck speed by the guitars of Siffringer and the pounding bass and tub thumping attack of Reign. This is none so more present than on ‘The Violation Of Morality’, a real head spinner this one, then it’s the highlight of the album for me the quite magnificent ‘Inner Indulgence’, a real dark track that takes me back to my early days as a metal-head when Venom and Slayer were the bands of choice. With the album at a close do they slow down any? HELL NO! It’s metal to the end with ‘Odyssey Of Frustration’ and finishing things off in style with the twisted metal of ‘No One Shall Survive’. This is another album that marks the bands conquest of the Euro Thrash Metal scene and shows that after 25 years in the business and no matter what trends come and go, METAL WILL REIGN SUPREME.
