Mixing traditional punk rock
with a more metal feel is no mean feat but French quartet Hellsuckers do
just that. Complete with double bass and an attitude of a rattlesnake
with a hangover, they deliver full throttle rock n roll. Think
Helicopters and Backyard Babies and you’ll get where they’re coming from.
The album opens up proper with
‘Ridin’, a no holds barred guitar fest that just rips riff after
monstrous riff, and the band take no prisoners from here on in.
This album sways more to the
sleaze metal side of the tracks, and veers away from the more punk side
than that of the bands previous albums. I for one believe this is the way
forward for the band.
This type of no nonsense rock
has always had a market in the UK and the rest of Europe and I’m sure the
Hellsuckers will find some fame with their infectious metal punk cross
over.
One surprise on the album is
the cover of Thin Lizzy’s ‘Cold Sweat’ sounds more a distant cousin of
original. However, the steaming guitar riffs midway through make it work
strangely enough.
This album may not sit
comfortably with some of the more melodic rock crowd, but if you like me
you like to stray over to the dark side occasionally, then this album is
for you. |
