Although not a debut album this is probably going to be remembered as the
one that really saw Vast burst out into the rock scene big time.
How many people I wonder were hooked after seeing the video and hearing
the first single 'Free' from this album? I know I certainly went out the
following day to try to purchase the album only to find it wasn't yet
released. A short while later it was in the shops and storming up the
sales charts.
A lot of thought has gone into this album to make sure that this time
around the band succeeds to hit the right audience. By the high quality of
the songs it appears that hard work and a bit of polish has helped to
produce this fine offering.
If I had to pin down the sound of the band I would have to say that in
parts it reminds me of The Smiths, U2 and Depeche Mode.
There's plenty of tracks on this album that would appeal to the clubs and
airways and I'm sure we will see a succession of tracks released as
singles. If you liked the sound of 'Free' then check out 'The Gates of
Rock N' Roll'. 'I don't have Anything' is one of my personal favourites. I
imagine the fans of Vast will be individuals who don't run with the pack
and follow that weeks trend. Instead I see them as largely being over 25
and old enough to appreciate a good song. The use of the Bombay Recording
Orchestra and the Theatre of Voices is what takes this album one step
closer than all the others to being remembered as a classic. |
