It’s been some
twenty years since Finnish band Waltari first hit the scene with their
experimental fusion of opera, grindcore, techno and electro, with a touch
of flower power and punk and monophone ringtones(!) to name but a few
sound bites that you will hear on this album.
The album and
band mastermind Kartsy Hatakka has never been one to rest on his laurels
and with this new album he has taken the band on step further with its
experimental and unique sound. The album has a theme to it and takes
a retrospective look at Europe today!!!
The album boasts
seventeen tracks, each with its own individual take on the Waltari sound.
So I’ll just bring you a few of the highlights of this very different and
awe inspiring album.
The album opener
‘Helsinki’ brings the Waltari sound bang up to date with the infusion of
electro dance and some heavy bass with Kartsy Hatakka mixing Finnish
vocals with English, to bring the whole concept together.
The pop punk
sound on ‘Too Much Emptiness’ is another stand out track on this album
with its fast pace and catchy chorus. The dark tones of ‘Digging
Inside’ take you inside the mind of Hatakka with the narrative vocals and
haunting melodies.
The pounding
techno dance bass beat of ‘Fly Into The Light’ will have any dance floor
filled with hardcore ravers and metal heads alike. The realms of the
Mission and Sisters of Mercy are hit upon with the industrial gothic
sounds of ‘Aching Eyes’
The extremes of
the album are taken to new heights with the death metal sound mixed with
what can only be described as a comic voice on ‘Exterminator Warheads’.
Even the Beatles
song ‘Julia’ is given the Waltari treatment and with Hatakka being a big
Beatles fan the song doesn’t stray to far away from the original.
It's hard to
describe this album, but if you’re a rock fan and are partial to a little
experimental nuance, then check this album out you’ll be more than
satisfied with what you’ll hear. |
