In 2006
the Wonderfools celebrated their 10th anniversary as one of
Norway’s longest serving Punk Rock bands, and now in 2008 the band have
returned with a new album and a vibrant new sound.
The band
still has that zest and vigour of a punk band but now with a more modern
edge, still with grinding guitars and slung down chords, but with that more
commercial feel.
This new
sound is sure to meet with some reservations by the bands fans, but if
they are true fans they will embrace this new look and feel the band have,
as it is sure to bring the band out of the Underground Scene and project
them on the road to international stardom.
The album
itself gets underway with ‘Thinking Of Something Mean To Say’, an instant
single in the making this one. It's classy and melodic with a great sing-along chorus that is catchy, think Blink 182 meets The Helicopters.
The feel
good factor of this album is immense, it's easy to get captivated by the
bands new energy and sound as things carry on in a similar Pop Punk
fashion with the superb ‘Out Of My Mind’ and ‘The Song About The Song’, two
really classy slices of American Pop Punk.
'Apples'
definitely shows the band have developed a sound that is very now. This one
is another catchy rocker that has instant commercial appeal and this is
carried on in great strides with the Ramones sounding ‘She’s So Easy’ and
the rapid high octane energy filled rocker ‘Nothing Left To Burn’, which is
one of my favourite tracks off the album.
The pace
is brought down just a touch with ‘Big Love’, but there is still energy
within the track as the guitars and vocals really make this one and
reminds me of early Foo Fighters. The band really do bring things down with
‘Taking Chances’, this semi – acoustic number really shows the band have
reached another level with this new sound and new outlook as the soaring
guitars lift this one out of the speakers and into you veins.
But the
diehard fans fear not the band haven’t softened up they simply have
matured and this maturity is found in bucket loads with the likes of
‘Never Gonna Make It’ and the anthemic title track ‘Too Late To Die
Young’, as well as the groove filled ‘Listen To Your Mother’.
The album
comes to a close as it started with feel good high energy rock with ‘Let
It Shine’ and rounding off the album with the 'Outro (Thinking Of Something
Mean To Say Pt2)', which rounds off an album that will surely make the world
sit up and take notice of Norway’s The Wonderfools as they step out of the
darkness and into the bright lights.
