Out of
the music factory that is Scandinavia comes another band that will rock
the world of metal. The name of this band is 8-Point Rose, the
album 'Primigenia'. The
band consist of Marcus Nygren on vocals, Alexander Timander guitars & screams,
Adam Johansson guitars and growls, Marcus Sjosund bass guitar, with
Johannes Timander completing the line-up on drums. Producer Ronnie
Bjornstrom also provides all acoustic guitars on the album, oh and by the way
I forgot to mention that the band members have an average age of just 20.
This is
an all important fact when you hear what the band have to offer with 'Primigenia'. The
band's sound has been described as melodic, heavy and catchy metal with
strong melodies with traces of Swedish cohorts Evergrey, The Rasmus and
Soil Work to name a few, so quite a mix of styles which leads the
question, does this recipe have the right ingredients for today’s metal
fan? Well to be honest this is one of those rare albums that spans
genres quite well and has enough bite to fulfill even the hardest of
metal fans with enough variety to please the traditionalist in the metal
field. The
album opens up with 'Resolve' and from here on in you will know what I was
referring to earlier. A real mix of powerful guitar work and head-on
bass and double-kick drum beats to appease the metalheads, but it’s the
tremendous vocals of Nygren that really push the album towards the
melodic metal side of things. Yes it's heavy, but the melody within all
the heaviness makes this a very listenable metal album. The
power and might of the band continues with the superb ‘Out of the
Shadows’, one of the tracks of the album for me. A heady mix of bass
and drums keeping that metal feel, while the guitars simply sing, but
the icing on the cake has again to be Nygren’s vocals, this guy has
one hell of a set of pipes on him. The
might of the album and the band continues with the massive ‘When Chaos
Rules Our Lives’. This is where The Rasmus and Evergrey similarities
come to the front. Believe me this mix really works. The
band really pound out the metal with ‘Endless Rage’, as the title
depicts an all guns blazing metal assault with Timander and Johansson
providing the growls and screams backing to Nygren’s more classic
metal vocals. One for the true blue metalheads and moshpitters of this
world. The
metal continues with the mighty ‘Relentless’, before things switch
with the more heady and darker ‘The Shadow’. This one has an anthemic
metal feel about it that is pure Scandinavian metal through and
through. Things
get back up to speed with the pounding metal of ‘Winter Storm’ and
the terrific ‘I Want The World To See’. The
title track ‘Primigenia' (which means first born) is a real switch again
as those acoustic guitars of producer Bjornstrom come into play on the
intro to this mellow instrumental. Then things finish off as they started,
with a slice of pounding metal that will rock the very foundations of
your soul as Timander unleashes a metal scream that will curdle the
blood before Nygren takes over, then the two duet on this real monstrous
metal assault. As
debut metal albums go this is a gem. These guys have something that is
rare in the world of metal these days, when everyone is jumping on one
bandwagon or another, these guys have their own thing going on which
really helps to make
them stand out from the herd. |
