Better
known as the frontman guitarist of New York rockers The Rods David
‘Rock’ Feinstein ends 2010 with the release of his new solo album 'Bitten By The Beast’, a celebration of old school Heavy Metal. The
album is not only nine tracks of guitar spewn hard rock but is the album
that features the last recorded performance of Ronnie James Dio (Feinstein’s
cousin) and the current single 'Metal Will Never Die', but before that
let's
get down the earlier tracks. Anyone
who like me was into The Rods knows where Feinstein is coming from
musically, with the hard edged guitar being the forefront of the sound
and this solo album is much of the same, which to me is a great. The
album opens up with ‘Smoke On The Horizon’, an all guns homage to the
old school Heavy Metal that many of my generation were weaned on. Big
chunky guitar riffs and a thumping rhythm section that really gets the
head-banging juices flowing. It's
more of the same as the album continues with the excellent ‘Evil in
Me’, again the guitar licks are firing out like bullets from a gun, with Feinstein’s unmistakable gruff metal vocal the icing on the cake
or should that be Rock Cake. The all
systems go Heavy Metal doesn’t ease as its pedal to the metal once more
with ‘Break Down The Walls’ with its early Judas Priest guitar
sound, then its ‘Metal Will Never Die’ featuring the late great Ronnie
James Dio. This is Dio at his iconic best, anthemic, powerful and driven, this could
easily have been on any of the albums Dio solo albums. It's just pure
Ronnie James Dio through and through. As a legacy this is great way to
remember one of the finest Hard Rock and Heavy Metal voices of all time
and its only right that this is the first single off the album. It's
back to Feinstein for the rest of the album again bringing the big metal
guns for ‘Kill The Demon’ and one of my favourites from the album
the southern boogie grooves of ‘Rocks Boogie’. This one’s right out
of the ZZ Tops school of good time guitar sound, while Feinstein adds a
feisty vocal to this great foot-tapper. It’s
back to the meat and bones Heavy Metal sound with the excellent riff
laden angst vibe of ‘Give Me Mercy’ before picking up the pace with
the headbangers delight that is ‘Run For Your Life’. The
album closes as it started with some great old school Heavy Metal in
‘Gambler Gambler’, a crunching guitar riff and a heady bass run
through the very heart of this one and rounds of a album worthy of the
Feinstein name. If you like me love The Rods no nonsense approach to
Heavy Metal then this one will be right up your street, so step out of the
shadows and let yourself be 'Bitten By The Beast', you know you want too! |
