Since their debut release ‘The Dark Discovery’ the name of Evergrey and Tom S Englund have become a powerful force in the Progressive Power Metal genre, with Englund becoming a renowned producer as well as great musician. Englund describes this new album “as a modern mix between the 'In Search of Truth' and 'Recreation Day’ albums", this is more than true of the nature of the band as it returns to their roots and steer away from the more experimental sound of the bands 2006 opus ‘Monday Morning Apocalypse’. This is Evergrey at their most dark and atmospheric guitar fuelled best. As things get underway with ‘Broken Wings’ you're taken into the pounding majesty world that is Evergrey. This album will be regarded by many as the bands finest release to date as it has something for all fans of the genre, as once again Englund and the rest of the band and have taken the band's music and the genre to another level. This is felt throughout every track. The album continues with the excellent ‘Soaked’, a dark and mood ridden opus with a heavy bass and drum presence from the off, then the guitars come in it’s power all the way. Things go from strength to strength with the excellent ‘Fear’, another monster from the Swedes as it powers on through taking you on a emotional power trip of massive guitar riffs, huge bass and drum sections, all interwoven with England’s fine metal vocals. The immense power the band put into each track is only equalled by the superlative compositions that the band has put together, as each track is unleashed, the more you enjoy the album. The albums power and might continues with ‘When Kingdoms Fall’ as Englund and Henrik Danhage lift the track with some great guitar moments and the keyboards of Rikard Zander add that extra symphonic edge to proceedings. The album continues to grow as each track unfolds, it's hard to find words to describe the power and grace that the entire album holds with monster tracks like ‘In Confidence’ and ‘Fail’, both huge anthemic metal titans. Then you have the mighty ‘Numb’ with the huge bass lines of Michael Håkansson and England’s fine vocals. The title track ‘Torn’, which is just a multi-layered masterpiece of powerful guitars and a huge rhythm section mixed with some more genteel moments from Englund all interwoven superbly into a magical mix that works extremely well. The powerful metal just keeps on coming with the likes of ‘Nothing Is Erased’, a more melodic metaller, the intense ‘Still Walk Alone’ and finishing off this great album with the mighty ‘These Scars’. If
you're into Digi-Pak's then you'll be able to listen to the bonus track
‘Caught In A Lie’ which will feature on that format. If ever
there was a more perfect slice of Prog Power Metal then I’ve haven’t
heard it, you won't get closer to perfection in this particular genre
than with ‘Torn’. |
