Exodus
are seen by many metal fans as the band that brought the San Francisco
metal scene to the masses. A band that lead the way for the likes of
Metallica and Testament.
The band have been threatening to come back to the forefront of the
thrash scene since splitting up way back in 1992. Since their reunion in
1996, the band have been sitting in the wings waiting for the right
opportunity to arise and take back the title of supreme trash metal band
of all time.
What with the Metallica somewhat losing the plot with St Anger, and no
one really threatening their supremacy of all that is metal over the
past 10 years, the time now seems right for Exodus to once again take
over the throne and bring metal fans what they have been waiting for.
With the insertion of new blood into the band in the form of Paul
Bostaph (Slayer, Forbidden) and Lee Altus (Heathen), together with new
vocalist Rob Dukes, the band are now ready to take on the world.
Opening up the album with 'Raze' the standard is set for all to follow.
The take no prisoners attitude of this track shows off the ferocity of
Dukes vocals from the start, and the ear splitting guitar riffs make the
track an outstanding first onslaught.
The quality continues with the somewhat mouthful title 'Deathampheatamine'.
A full on metal blitz of guitar and drums. The pace never threatens to
slow down as the metal continues to power on with tracks like 'Karma's
Messenger', 'Shudder To Think', and 'I Am Abomination'.
The only time the pace slows down enough for you to catch your breath is
with 'Altered Boy'. Although that brief interlude is shortlived as the
screw in turned once more with 'Going Going Gone'. If any track stands
out head and shoulders above the others then this one does it for me.
The ferocity of the vocals and the extreme speed of the guitars, this is
thrash metal at its best.
The final three tracks 'How Thy Death Day Come', '44 Magnum Opus' and
'Shovel Headed Kill Machine' take trash metal to the edge and back
again. Non more so than the title track 'Shovel Headed Kill Machine'.
If you like it hard and fast then I recommend that you check out this
album.
