Another band to come out the hot bed of musical talent that is Sweden are Fatal Smile, a band that follows in this countries long tradition of bringing premier rock bands to the masses. Hailing from the countries capital Stockholm, 'Neo Natural Freaks' is the bands follow-up the their acclaimed debut 'Beyond Reality', and follows the line of great Swedish bands like Backyard Babies and The Helicopters and the like, with that Scandinavian sleaze rock n roll attitude that I love so much. The album opens up after the intro with the title track ‘Neo Natural Freaks’, a great hard hitting rock tune with its tuned down guitars and down n' dirty attitude. A really great start to the album and one which had me hooked from the off. The album continues with ‘Bleeding Kiss’, a heavier number with vocalist H.B. Anderson sounding similar to Johnny Bollinger of Skid Row. This heavier side of the band is mixed with the sleazy on the excellent ‘Crash And Burn’. ‘Love – Learn – Hate’ is the first single and video from the new album and is another track with a fine vocal performance for Anderson. He manages to bring aggression and melody into his vocals without one being over stated by the other, something that the new breed of young vocalists should take notice of. ‘Quiet Chaos’ is a track that brings yet another facet of the bands nature, with its darkened tones and heavy bass, very early Sabbath. The album continues to impress with a couple of my personal favourites off the album, ‘Practice What You Preach’ and the excellent ‘Dead Man Walking’, before the album reaches new heights with the outstanding ‘Color Blind’. A piece of hard rock excellence and ‘Common People’, another solid rock attack. These two tracks totally out rock most of the stuff I’ve heard this year alone. The
album closes (all too soon for me) with ‘11th Hour’,
another bass driven track that just oozes swagger and attitude from the
off, with Anderson’s vocals and Y’s driven guitar riffs and closes
what is a great rock n roll album, which sets new boundaries of
excellence by being both familiar and new all in the same breath. |
