One of the busiest guitar players in the Christian Metal genre has to be Bill Menchen as he has already released his own 'The Seventh Power' album out this month, (a review of which can be found elsewhere on this site), but he is involved once again with Final Axe and this their latest release 'The Axe Of Apostles' is another storming Heavy Metal release from Retroactive Records. Those familiar with Menchen and his style of guitar playing will know it's dark and mood ridden and with him playing all the guitar and bass parts on this album, you know you're in for some fine Heavy Metal. Menchen is again joined by Stryper’s Robert Sweet on drums, with Final Axe being completed by the majestic power ridden vocals of Simon Tyler. It's METAL all the way with this album as it delivers a punch from the off with ‘Heads Will Roll’, a strong Heavy Metal opener that highlights both the power of Tyler’s vocals and the ferocity of Sweets thunderous stick work. While Menchen powers on through the track with wanton abandonment, a guitarist on a mission. The same power and force is carried on into the more down beat ‘Burn In Hell’ and the NWOBHM sounding ‘Ball And Chain’. The dark mood ridden Metal is in abundance on the album and is very much led by Menchen’s grinding guitar work. The album continues with 'Hangin By A Thread’ and ‘Dealing With Death’, two dark and moody monsters with the latter having a little Slayer feel about it. This is a Metal album for sure full of power and intensity with the highlight of it all being the massive ‘Vengeance Is Mine’. Again Menchen’s guitar work brings the whole thing to the boil with some flashes of thrash and speed metal guitars. All
in all an album that will defy all the critics who have tried to label
this genre as soft. There IS more to Christian Metal than 80’s
throw backs, there is actually true Metal running through these veins. |
