It soothes this old metal heart to hear a young band take up their instruments and declare their all to the gods of metal. Emerging out of Cobh, Co. Cork, Ireland are a trio of young hopefuls who go under the name of Forbidden Son. This trio of young metallers and I mean young, with the youngest being drummer Barry at only 16 years and guitarist Jamie at 17 years, with the elder of the three being bassist and cellist Peter who comes in at the ripe old age of 19, this trio deliver a sound that may be a little rough around the edges, but the whole vibe from this mini album is good power driven metal. The album is mainly instrumental with things getting underway with ‘Equilibrium’, a meandering mix of guitar and gentle rhythm sections interwoven with a haunting back track of flowing waters. A track that leads into the more metal enthused title track ‘Balance Of All Good And Evil’, which features the vocals of Jamie. This track could do with a little polishing up from a professional mix but the basics are all there, heady guitars and a thumping rhythm section, the foundation of all good metal whatever the genre. Things continue with ‘Arise’, a more haunting affair that again is a little rough around the edges but these three really have the makings of something huge with this one. ‘Symphony In The Sky’ starts off with a thunderous opening segment then suddenly the tempo changes into a more relaxed metal style as the vocals of Jamie come in. This is where the band mix their metal influences with their Cure stylings. This track is both haunting and dark and the echo behind the vocals adds great atmosphere to the song. The track then erupts into a more traditional metal track as the guitars and bass take over to bring the song to an emphatic close. The album closes with ‘A Colour That Fades Away’ which explores the trios experimental tendencies as it sways between dark gothic brooding metal and classic Maidenesque bass tones, all interwoven with Jamie's vocals. I
said this CD is a little rough around the edges production wise although
the overall mindscape is that with a few more years behind them and
someone who is willing to invest in some quality studio time and
practice, the band could be onto a winner with their unique sound. |
