Formed in 2004 by guitarist Pasi and bass player Teemu, the pair had a vision of a band with a more pop rock vibe full of emotion and calm, and to be honest they have captured their vision magnificently along with Mika on guitars, Kuha on drums, Teme on keyboards and finally completing the line-up, Annika who provides the wonderful vocals for the band. 'Overdosed On You' is a superb slice of mellow progressive hard rock with the vocals of Annika coming across as a mix between Heart's Ann Wilson and Within Temptation's Sharon Den Adel, in a voice that is both powerful and melodic. From the opener ‘Who’s Behind The Door’ you know that the album is going to be something rather special as the guitars of Pasi get things underway, then those fantastic vocals of Annika take over on what is a great opener and wets the appetite for what is about to follow. The magnificent haunting melodies continue with ‘Lost Like Dreamers Are’. I can't state how good the vocals of Annika are on this album, they're some of the finest I’ve heard in a while and she really shows that you can deliver power without effort and still maintain the emotion of the song without going overboard. The track itself soars between the big vocals and some magnificent guitars and keyboards. As the track builds up to its big finish it has to be one of my favourite tracks on the album. The album goes from strength to strength as things continue with ‘A Rain Tonight’ as the band bring the tempo up a little with this one. A real power performance by Annika again on this song as the guitars parry with each other for supremacy. This some of the finest Pop Prog I’ve heard in such a long time. 'Heal' is another beautiful song that shows the true majesty of the band. This gentle refrain has all the makings of a commercial single, as does the haunting tones of the next one ‘Ghost In The Family’. This one is just crying out for a huge Gothic style video to accompany such an epic song. This album just keeps getting better and better as each track unfolds and another great track comes pouring out of the speakers in the form of ‘Jubileum Of My Sorrow’. A track very much in the Within Temptation/Evanescence vein. The splendour just keeps on coming with another of my personal favourites the excellent ‘Satellites’, this is where Annika gives her finest vocal performance so far and with so many outstanding performances this one a mean feat in itself. The now familiar guitars of Pasi ring out from the off in the thought provoking melodies of ‘Million Miles Away’ and carry on well into ‘Draining’, before this superb album closes with the very apt ‘Happy New Year’, the only instrumental on the album with Annika just coming in at the end with the title, which closes things quite nicely. This
is one hell of an album, if you're into the lighter side of the
Progressive Metal genre then you’ll just love what 'For Selena And
Sin' have put together. |
