I’ve seen many a good musician who can carry a tune and I've seen many a good musician who can not only carry a tune but become a part of it. Bright young guitarist Chris Appleton of Fury UK is one musician who surely gives it his all in each ad every performance he does, such is his passion for his art. Ever since I first saw Chris I was impressed with his technique, a real six string wonder who has grown up into quite a songwriter as well, as the bands second album 'VR' shows in spades. Fury UK are a power trio without a doubt and this album shows how they have grown since their first demo 'My Tomorrow' and the bands first official release 'Face Of Adversity', both just tasters of the band that we always knew was in there somewhere. 'VR' takes the best of Megadeth and Iron Maiden and gives it the Devlin Townsend treatment, big riffs wrapped around a powerful vocal and thumping rhythm section. Although the band have changed line-up since those early days, I do honestly think this new combo of brother Luke on bass and Martin McNee on drums are here for the duration. Now back to the album which opens up with the title track 'VR' and straight away those Megadeth vibes come charging through. But this band aren’t a clone, they are as original a metal band as you will hear, it's just that you can't help comparing bands to others, plus this gives those you haven’t heard the band an insight into what the band are all about. The album continues it's metal path with ‘Game Over’, again big guitar licks from Chris Appleton as he shows you can combine speed with melody and still be as metal as they come. ‘The Hostage’ again is an outstanding slice of metal but this time the speed element is taken out as the sheer metal melodies are the order of the day on this song. The same however can't be said about ‘Playing With Violence'. This has a fast intricate riff building from start to finish that is almost Maidenesque in parts and which leads nicely into ‘Outpost’, a slow burner that builds from humble beginnings to an all out future metal classic. You can hear Chris’s love of the prog side of life throughout this one as he and his guitar become one entity. ‘The Human Condition’ is all out titanic metal once more as Chris unleashes the big guns for this one. Again very much in the Megadeth vein, although one of the tracks of the album has to be ‘Brotherhood’, an all metal anthem which showcases perfectly just how the band has matured since the debut. The guitar solos come thick and fast, but they are equaled by some great bass lines and a monster drum sound throughout. ‘The Last
Invention’ is a short solo from Chris Appleton before it's all guns
blazing metal with ’Call To Arms’, then it's one of the finest
things the band have done and I’m glad to see its inclusion on the
album, the song is ‘Death By Lightening’, first heard on the bands
'My Tomorrow' demo and probably one of the best all out metal track
you’ll hear, this song sounds great on this new album, as it did on
the demo, but live it's a real show stopper and rounds off what is
without a doubt the bands best album to date. I'm sure this latest
release will see them in good stead for tours this year and even some
festivals next year. |
