Girls
it's time to get out those pom-poms once more and shake them for all
your worth. Sweden's sexiest exports have done it again, they've
created the ultimate feel good party album. Forget the Karaoke, if
you want to get your party jumping the only thing you're gonna need is
Tin Star, Snoopy, Hot Rod and Slim Pete. In fact with guests like
that do you really need to invite anyone else?
Collectively known as Gemini 5 these glam gods have waited nigh on 3
years before unleashing this latest masterpiece upon us. Can it
really be 3 years since the release of their debut album 'Babylon
Rockets'? An album so popular it stormed the UK rock clubs with
such anthems as 'Get It Off', 'You Spin Me Round' and of course the
mighty 'Babylon Rockets'.
At the time 'Babylon Rockets' was released it was like a breath of fresh
air to the glam and the gorgeous who were crying out for a hero.
Keeping true to their roots so as not to loose their die-hard fans, but
at the same time moving with the times, 'Black:Anthem' is a much more
polished and perhaps commercially more acceptable to a wider audience
than 'Babylon Rockets' was.
The overall production on this latest release is far superior than the
original which now sounds a little raw in comparison, although at the
time it was released, that's one of the many things the fans loved about
it. Lead singer Tin Star's vocals sound more mature and have a lot
more depth than the Faster Pussycat-esq dizzying heights on the debut
album. This time they have a much more lush and mature sound to
them, all of which adds to the seductive sound of the songs.
The tightness of the musicianship from Tin Star, Hot Rod and Snoopy is
much more evident with this release as well. They've studied their
field and saw what the fans were looking for the first time around and
learnt from that. They know their strong points and they've
multiplied them by 100 with 'Black:Anthem'. Bringing in the
heartbeat of the band Slim Pete carries the beat that will have a
thousand heads bobbing and even more pulses racing.
As a die-hard fan of the band myself I've waited long and hard for them
to release this second album. When I finally got my paws on it my
heart was beating so fast with excitement but at the same time I was
scared to put it on and listen to it. Would it live up to my
expectations or would it be like so many second albums and let me down.
I didn't want to lose the respect I had for these goodtime boys.
I needn't have worried because what came out of the speakers was so much
more than I could ever have dreamed of. Hit after hit, after
motherf*cking hit. There's not one bad track among them.
This release was so worth the wait. Mixing in the best of the feel
good sleaze rock from their debut album with strong, new, modern sound
anthems, Gemini Five are here to show the likes of Marilyn Manson and
HIM how to really set the place on fire.
Oh I can't wait for the Clearasil and lip gloss brigade to wrap their
lugs around this one. I foresee a stampede for Gemini Five posters
to put up on their bedroom walls not only across the land!
The albums name 'Black:Anthem' describes the nature of this album to
perfection. It's crammed packed with strong anthem like songs that
once they hit the clubs will most definitely refuse to leave. If I
had to describe this album to someone who wasn't familiar with Gemini
Five then I would simply say this is the ultimate Friday night album.
I can't think of another album I'd rather have to set me up for a
weekend of partying than this one.
I do have one problem with this album though, if I had to choose just
one song to sum it up I simply couldn't do it. My personal
favourite track out of them all is the thunderingly powerful 'When the
body Speaks'. Packing more punch than a cup of pure caffeine this
song really gets my blood pumping. Another track to slap you
senseless and drag you on the dancefloor is 'Second II None'.
If you are one of the many teeny-rockers out there that only get to hear
what Kerrang or MTV tell you to listen to, then go out to your local
record store, ask them to put this cd on the listening post. If
HIM make you tingle then listen to 'Black:Anthem', or 'Heaven Come
Undone'. If Mr Manson and his fist pumping anthems are more your
bag then try 'Bring on the Monkey', 'Making love Song', or even the
wickedly delicious 'Sinners Parade' with it's electro goth feel.
However, if like me you're a funky little disco diva who remembers
Gemini Five the first time around, well you'll already know how
versatile these guys can be. Just go buy the album, you don't need
to listen to it first. I just know you're gonna love each and
every track. The album also include the video to go with 'When The
Body Speaks', I ask you, really what more could a fan ask for?
Stick it on your player and shake it for all your worth baby!
