This metal band from Plymouth/Truro has set the metal scene alight with their debut album, 'Cheyne Stoking'. Are they able to carry this momentum with their second album? Compared to early Pantera and influenced by Black Label Society and Mastodon, this thrash/hardcore/heavy metal mix appeals to all. The album is instantly different from the first track, with its subtle use of cymbals to lead into a guitar-fuelled mix. The cymbals are ever-present throughout the first song, and take on the sound of a heartbeat, with the vocals mixing between hard and heavy to hardcore screamo. The head-bangable beat is instantly recognisable throughout each of the songs, as is the constantly shifting vocals, showing the ability of their vocalist in keeping up. The guitars and drums play a prominent part throughout and provide the canvas for the extra effects and vocals to be splattered upon, literally. Each song open differently – from the near ethereal with 'Mary Celeste' to the pounding guitar/drum combination so prevalent throughout. This gives each song its own timbre within the album and makes it easily discernible between every song. However, in places it can be very repetitive and samey, and would benefit from a little more differentiation. This does not detract from their skills, which are prevalent from the drummer and guitarist in particular, creating a steady backbeat for the vocalist to work with. This backbeat is again recognisable, and again can be a little samey, so for the next album a little more variety may be a necessity to keep up with the constantly shifting sub-genres of thrash and hardcore metal.
