Metal Heaven

One album that really made its mark on me in 2009 was Chris Laney’s first solo album ‘Pure’, a real balls to the wall rock album.  Now in 2010 he returns with another stunning release in the shape of ‘Only Come Out At Night’ which takes over where 'Pure' left off.

Again it's a ballsy gritty rock opus with Laney not only bringing his superb metal vocals to the table, but also a great guitar sound, some percussion and also keyboards.  Laney also brings in the talents of Brian Robertson, Conny Bloom, Ian Haugland (Europe), Zinny Zan (Shotgun Messiah, Zan Clan), Nalle 'Grizzly' Påhlsson (Therion, Treat, Randy Piper’s Animal) and a few others to play on the album as well as the inclusion of writing credits with Bruce Kulick.

The album takes over where 'Pure' left off and shows Laney is just oozing with talent, not just behind the desk but in front of it as well.  The album continues with ‘Love So Bad’ again big riffs thrown around a great chorus a real kick-ass rock track.

Speaking of kick-ass rock, one of my favourites off the album has to be ‘Rockstar’, a more anthemic a rock track you’ll not hear all year.  Big gritty riffs all on a bed of a monster rhythm section provided by Haugland and Påhlsson on drums and bass respectively.  This one will just rock your world from the off, mark my words.

This album just keeps getting better and better each time I listen to it, with great tracks like ‘B4 It’s 2Late’, a more sedate rock ballad and the thumping bass ridden tones of ‘Eyes Out Poppin’, a balls to wall rock with more edge than a bucket of razor blades and another firm favourite of mine.

There is switch mid album with ‘One Kiss Tonight’, not as savage a rocker, just more melodic than the previous tracks, but still a great track and shows Laney’s diversity that was previously highlighted on 'Pure'.

But it's soon back to the all out rockers as the riff fuelled majesty of ‘Gotta Run’ is unleashed. A great Hard Rock track this is full of Scandinavian swagger and rocks big style.  Then it’s time for another of my favourite moments from this great album, ‘Playing With Fire’.   This is a melody rich slice of rock that just sweeps you away on a magic carpet of great guitars and Laney’s great vocals.

Laney even puts in a little old school charm with ‘Crush’.  There's a sleazy vibe to this one that is what the Swedes are producing hard and fast these days and it’s easy to see why Crazy Lixx chose Laney to produce their 'New Religion' album, this has that same high octane vibe about it.

The album doesn’t falter one iota and continues to impress right till the last track, but before that there is still the fantastic ‘I Had Enuff’, with the final track ‘Day Dream’ wrapping up another superb album from Laney.  I am so impressed with this album that I’m making it my album of the month for April 2010, but don’t take my word for how great this album is, check it out for yourself.
