'Aborted
Revolutions' is the latest EP from Nottingham based progressive
metallers Illuminatus. A band that since their original
incarnation back in 2001 has gone through many changes in line-up and
musical styles,
and I think finally have found a winning formula that they should stick
to.
The EP opens up with the hard hitting 'Emotion Sickness', a track that
is as diverse as it is distinctive. A mix of raw passion and
varying tempo changes that really makes the hairs on the back of your
neck stand up.
The second track 'Wargasm' is my favourite track on the EP. With
its almost organic sound that just radiates the sheer magnitude of
potential that the band has, combined with its soaring guitar, and
keyboards that just ebb and flow throughout the track, this mixed with
the heavier mid section provides an almost epic feel to the track.
'White Lies' the final track shows the heavier side of the band, and
almost goes back the days when they experimented with being a death
metal band, back in one of the bands earlier manifestations. With
powerful raw vocals and guitars throughout, it's not until the end of
the track that the real talent of the band shines through. Heavier
influences are thrown aside and an almost melodic guitar sound brings
the track to a close. This is probably why the band are so hard to
categorize and don’t fit into a specific genre.
The band have been described as being ''too commercial"
for the heavier extreme labels and perhaps a little too raw for the more
mainstream labels' and with this EP you can see why they don’t
fit into the current trends that the record labels are looking for,
which is a shame because I think the band could go a long way with the
right label behind them to motivate them and to take their obvious
talents further.
