You wanted the best you got the best” ...

Never have those words been more relevant than in 2009 when the Simmons, Stanley, Singer and Thayer return with the blistering new album 'Sonic Boom'.  This is the album that the die hard Kiss fans have been waiting decades for, the band return to the old school Kiss sound that made them the world wide phenomena they rapidly became.  The band could have quite easily gone into retirement mode and just did a "Best of KISS" for the rest of their careers, but no they have put together a real bass boomer of an album in 'Sonic Boom'.

This album is without a doubt the best album they have released in decades and from the opener 'Modern Day Delilah', it's classic KISS once more with that definite KISS bass tones provided by Gene Simmons, together with Stanley and Thayer providing that KISS guitar sound that is very Strutteresque, the band have definitely returned to their beginnings with this album, albeit with a slightly more modern spin on things.

It’s more of the same with 'Russian Roulette', a thumper of a track with Simmons providing his lustful vocal vibe to this one, then its ‘Never Enough’, a song for those who loved the 'Lick It Up' era.  A real grooved filled track that is just one of the many highlights of the album.

With 'Yes I Know' we return to that classic sound, as Simmons lays down that familiar vocal to this one while the guitars of Thayer bring it all home.  ‘Stand’ is more a guitar fuelled groover with Stanley and Simmons duetting on this one.  Anthemic just doesn’t do this one proud, it's just arena rock as only KISS can do.

'Hot And Cold' is again Simmon’s time as the bass thumper puts that monstrous tongue firmly into the cheeks with this sleazy groover, with Thayer and Stanley exchanging licks on this one, before a change on the vocal front as Singer takes over as singer!  On ‘All For The Glory’ another massive bass filled rocker that is again classic KISS and the heaviest track on the album by far.

That classic 70’s sound in carried on with the massive ‘Danger Us’, before another slice of pure Simmons with ‘I’m Am Animal’.  The bass thumper really makes his mark on the album with this one, first with his trademark bass intro, before his innuendo laden vocals fill in the gaps only the mind leaves out.  All this one needs now is a rocket guitar to make this one of the classic KISS tracks of all time.

Then the full quota of singers on the album is filled as Thayer lays down the vocals on ‘When Lightening Strikes’, this is Melodic Rock KISS style and a real 80’s style rocker that will no doubt lead to a solo album from Thayer in the near future, because he shows he really has a voice for hard rockin’.

That 80’s feel is continued with the album closer ‘Say Yeah’ as Stanley once again puts the 'X' into the bands sound and rounds off what is the best KISS album in decades.

You’ve got to admire the KISS machine, after 35 years they still know what the fans want and need and this album will surely keep KISS Inc in motion for a good few more years to come.
