This one-man death metal outfit from Perthshire has the dubious honour of being the first band signed to UKEM. Hamish Maguire is the man responsible for the brutal death metal sounds of Laceration and this, his debut album. Combining brutal death metal, slam and technical metal, Laceration attempts to produce interesting metal, aimed at fans of Suffocation, Inveracity and Disgorge. This eight-track album flows between the best of the studio and live work by Laceration. The constant change and shift within each of the instruments is perfectly timed to match those of the others, with the fast, hard guitars taking prominence over everything. Unusually, the chord and key changes are much more frequent and make for a more layered, unique, yet till hard and heavy experimental death metal sound. This is a lot easier to listen to than many bands, with the irrepressible drumbeat that resounds and reverberate around in within every song, making them unique and different even within the genre. The addition of short quotes gleaned from what seem to be horror films only serve to enhance and introduce certain songs, allowing for a deeper meaning to be created from within the near unintelligible lyrics that haunt the genre. This depth is further intensified by the frenzied drumbeat and guitar that haunts his work. The studio sound more polished and clean than the live work, although the intensity of this is still visible within. This has the potential to go far. Review
