Following up from last years EP 'Welcome To The Underground' Lahannya returns with the full-length concept album 'Defiance''. 'Welcome To The Underground' was the beginning of the tale of Britain failing to overcome the tyranny of terror its citizens retreat to the Underground system of the capital and live a parallel existence. 'Defiance'
takes the tale further as Lahannya envisaged the female resistance leader
who lives with the guilt of being one of the persons responsible for the
technology that led to the surveillance society of Britain, that led to
the mass exodus to the Underground. The album is Lahannya’s more diverse and darker album than anything she and the band have done before. From the opening narrative of ‘Prelude’, the scene is set for the rest of the album. Dark heavy bass ridden, tuned out guitars get things underway proper with ‘Dying Inside’ and instantly your thrown into Lahannya’s dark imagination of a 'Brave New World'. The heavy feel is continued with ‘Sick And Tired’, again broody dark bass vibes provided by Lutz Demmler while the guitars of Chris Milden give it the slung down edginess all the while the powerhouse drumming of Belle is the glue that keeps it all together. One of my favourite tracks off the album is ‘Brave New World’, the blend of electro goth with traditional metal is just stunning a massive massive track and one where Lahannya’s vocals just tower above the thunderous musicianship of the rest of the band. Tthe production on this track is just superb, not a not out of place. 'Burn' again is one of the heaviest tracks on the album this is underground metal at its best thumping rhythms throughout, great stuff. It’s back to Lahannya’s roots a little with the dark electro gothic tones of ‘Adrenaline’, before things take a break tempo wise with ‘Open Your Eyes’. Still a big bass presence and tuned down guitars a plenty but it’s Lahannya’s vocals mix with the orchestrations that really make this one. It's all guns blazing once more with the excellent ‘Interference’ full of electro jibes that wouldn’t go amiss in London’s Slimelight Club, blended again with some great symphonic metal vibes. The album never lets up one iota as the thunderous tone keep on coming with ‘Piece By Piece’ and the Korn like ‘Kill Me If You Care’, the thumping ‘No Way Out’ before the album closer ‘Our War’. A massive anthemic track to finish off what is without a doubt the next chapter in the life of the band that is Lahannya. |
