Artist: Lovemat
Title: The Fearless Hairdays Of Youth
   Label: Disturbia Records

Hailing from Morpeth in the North of England Lovemat are a band that I have actually caught live and to be honest I wasn’t impressed.  Whether this was because I caught them on a bad night or not, I will have to catch them live again to see whether this was the case.

But on CD the band is a completely different band as their debut release 'The Fearless Hairdays of Youth' on their own Disturbia Record label proves.  The band plays psychedelic punk with the vigour of early Guns n Roses with a Monster Magnet twist.

The album opens up with ‘The Battle of Falcon Hill’, a short intro style track that paves the way to the band first single off the album ‘Jack Dream’.  A song I must admit is a grower, with its hard hitting vocals and up tempo feel and addition brass section.

The album continues in similar vein with ‘My TV Watches Me’, a track that epitomizes the punk driven youth of the band.  ‘Lost In The City’ continues the modern approach to the bands sound with its tuned down guitars and Nirvana style vocals.

The album takes a more funkier approach with ‘Meat Market’ before the saxophone drive ‘RSVP’.  Another short track that acts as an intro into the ska styling of ‘For The Hell Of It’.

The album really comes into its own with ‘In Pieces’, a great little track that just rocks from the off.  Another rocker is ‘Primal Image’, a track that is very reminiscent of Rocket From The Crypt.

The album starts to pick up momentum from this point on with ‘Between The Lines’, and the Commitments sounding ‘Raw Animal Sex’.  Another short track that acts as an intro into the album closer ‘ A Very Bad Thing’.  A track that is very Queens of the Stoneage with its infectious bass and on which rounds off what is for me a very surprising release.
