After
a two-year absence since the release of the acclaimed comeback album
‘Breath of Life’ in 2002, we gladly see Magnum return with their
latest studio album ‘Brand New Morning’. This is where I’d usually
give you an insight into the band and their music, but hey this is
Magnum, enough said!
It seems that they have been around since forever and that’s nearly
true. The only change is the permanent addition of former Thunder skins
man Harry James. Other than this it’s back to doing what they do best
and that’s give the superb song writing talents of Tony Clarkin an
airing.
‘Brand New Morning’ the opening and title track, has the makings of
a classic Magnum track with a powerful guitar intro that gently eases
into Bob Catley’s faultless vocals. Then it crescendos into a
powerhouse chorus than is instantly recognizable as Magnum.
The quality continues with ‘It’s Time To Come Together’, another
fine example of the quality songwriting that Clarkin continues to
produce album after album. Next we have the almost orchestral feel of
‘We All Run’ which is pure ear candy. Just as you start thinking
things can’t get any better then ‘The Blue And The Grey’ hits you.
A track that will leave you weak with its simplistic message of war and
its futility.
‘I'd Breathe For You’ is again trademark Magnum with slow meaningful
vocals and thought rousing lyrics that we’ve all come to expect from
Tony Clarkin's songwriting. The same can be said about ‘The Last
Goodbye’ and ‘Immigrant Son’.
If you’re expecting Magnum to break new ground with this album then
you will be sadly disappointed. However if you are expecting a high
quality Magnum album then you most certainly won't be disappointed. The
closest you’ll come to a ‘Spirit’ or a ‘Storytellers Night’ or
even a ‘Jerusalem’ on the album is probably going to be the track
‘We All Run’.
