We
in this country may skeptically welcomed the European market place into
our homes, but musically we seem to ignore the vast amount of
outstanding talent that Europe has to offer.
If it wasn’t for a very small amount of people in this country
actually taking an avid interest in the Rock and Metal scene abroad then
the likes of Masterplan would be another band that just slip us by.
'Aeronautics' is the bands second release and continues with same high
quality that the self-titled first album had. Best described as
Melodic Metal, 'Aeronautics' is a loosely based upon a flying theme
without actually being a concept album.
The album opener 'Crimson Rider' delivers such a punch that its felt
throughout the whole album with Jorn Lande's vocals sounding
outstanding. The power and ferocity of the bass and drums is pure
class and is supported by some gut wrenching guitar riffs.
Combined these ingredients make this one of my favourite tracks off the
album and a great way to start on the album.
The pace is slowed down a little with 'Back For My Life' and is the most
commercial tracks on the album but without selling out the Masterplan
sound. 'Wounds' is another power packed track the keeps getting
better each time I listen to it. 'I'm Not Afraid' starts off at a
slower pace but gradually builds up to a crescendo of guitar, bass and
drum in perfect harmony.
'Headbangers Ballroom'' is a track that is very reminiscent of Lande's
solo work in which he takes a more symphonic style approach to the
track, with the guitars and orchestral sound working well together.
'After The War' brings out the Coverdale sound in Lande's vocals with
this being a more sombre melodic track.
'Into The Arena' brings back the power of the first track 'Crimson
Rider' with its intense drums, monstrous guitar riffs, and the powerful
vocals that were present on the opening track. One thing that has
impressed me with this album is the quality of the lyrics on the album.
The song writing has really improved leaps and bounds, a perfect example
of this is 'Dark from the Dying'.
'Falling Sparrow' is another fantastic track that really lets Lande's
vocals shine through. The delivery of the guitars is some of the
best I've heard for quite some time. The entire track just sweeps
you away on a musical joy ride.
The old adage of leave them wanting more was never so apt as the final
track 'Black in the Blue' does just that. A mouth watering track
that leaves you completely drained from sheer delight with its mix of
intricate piano, several tempo changes and superb vocals once again.
This is nine minutes of pure class.
If this album doesn’t get the band noticed in this country then
nothing will and that would be a shame for one and all.
