Well 2010 is just underway
and already there have been a number of stunning albums to come our way
and one to watch out for is the self-titled mighty MayChild debut
release.
The band led by the guitars of Yvan Roberge and the drumming of one Michael Shotton and the superb vocals of Marc Spenard on all but one track, these three gents are joined by a plethora of talented musicians on one hell of a debut album. The album gets up and running straight out of the traps with ‘Mission’, a gritty opener if ever there was one, with Roberge making his intent from the off, while Spenard delivers one of the best vocals you’ll hear from the genre this year. The more traditionalist amongst the fans of the genre will just love the likes of ‘Warrior’, but those who like to get down in the groove will take ‘Feeling’ under their wing, while the guitar players will melt away with ‘In Many A Ways’. Although on all the songs mentioned, there is one solid foundation that remains a constant and that is the superb vocals of Spenard. The album rocks up big style with ‘Preacher’s Story’, where Roberge brings in a little talk box for this one and then there's my favourite track off the album, the straight up hard rock of ‘All The Things We're Missing’. 'Sunshine' is just that, a ray of sunshine to pick you up. If you’re into old school rock enjoy the likes of UFO then this one’s for you. I mentioned that there was one song where Spenard doesn’t do the vocal well that song is next ‘Borrowed Ship’. On the mike for this one is Victor Galea, who has more of David Lee Roth vocal style than Spenard and delivers a real punch on this one. As well as Galea, we see a change in the drum seat as Shotton is replaced with Phil Bowa. The album continues with
‘The Call’. Again a riff fuelled slice of hard rock which
takes us nicely to the album closer, with a Roger Waters songs ’Have A
Cigar’. A real touch of old school rock to round off a great
album that should be high on everyone’s "check it out" list
for 2010. |
