Artist: Mely
Title: Portrait Of A Porcelain Doll
   Label: Silver Wolf

Ok, I have a confession to make. I listened to this CD a few times in my car, and to be honest with you, I didn’t like it. Firstly I thought I was listening to a Queensryche cover band (there can be only one Queensryche!!) and secondly I just thought there was too much going on, it sounded too busy!! However, I gave the CD one last chance on a proper stereo, and what a difference!!

These lads know what they are doing and what they are doing is good.

  • ‘Of Doubts And Fears’ showcases each of the elements of the band, the instruments and the lovely vocals.
  • ‘Grown For Doom’ is like a song that should be included in a Rock Opera. I could just imagine sitting in a big theatre with my lighter in the air for this number.
  • ‘Bricks Against Porcelain Dolls’ has the compulsory big chorus and a different style of vocals that work well.
  • ‘Don’t Wake The Sleeping Dog’ is a ballad that has gorgeous guitar work that gives the song an almost live feel.
  • ‘Hell Low’ is savage!! It is powerful from all aspects and would give Dio a run for their money.
  • ‘It Is Cold Without Shoes’ is one of my favourites, the piano at the start is haunting and it is lovely to hear the riff of the song being played on a piano as opposed to the guitar at the start.

Each song has a very unique music pattern, but put them all together and Mely have created their own fusion of rock opera / gothic and power metal. This is their 4th album to date and I will definitely be checking out the other 3!!
