Freakzoid
is the debut album from Dutch melodic hard rockers Mennen, founded by
Joss Mennen who has worked as a session musician with bands such as the
Scorpions, Danger Danger and Craaft. The band have also seen
support slots for the likes of Dio, Whitesnake, Thunder, The Scorpions
and Molly Hatchet.
With such vast quantity of experience behind them the band have put this
to good use and have delivered an album of classic melodic rock, that
might not appeal to the vast majority of new rock fans out there but
will certainly appeal to the more mature fan of the genre.
Opening up with ‘Down’ which is a perfect example of the style and
melody that the band have put forward as their trademark sound. The
track starts off a little to slow for an opener in my opinion but
quickly picks up the pace and soon you get to here the wonderful guitar
licks from Eric Van De Kerkhof.
The tempo once again slows down on the second track the ballad ‘Above
The Water Line’. 'Its Over’ reminds me somewhat of The Police with a
bit of a rockier edge, with again the guitar work being the saving grace
of the track.
There are quite a lot of ballads on this album and for some me included
there aren’t enough punchy tracks to break down the album into a more
palatable final product. More track in the same ilk as the tracks
‘Bob’ ‘These Good Times’ and my personal favourite ‘Wicked
White’ which to me is the stand out track on the album with its heavy
riffing guitars and out standing rhythm sections, its just a pity it’s
the final track on the album unless you have the copy with the three
bonus tracks on it.
Freakzoid is too mellow for my tastes but with surely be welcomed with
open arms by those who like a more sombre sounding melodic rock.
