After a hiatus of some four years The Moistboyz return to the studio to bring back their own gritty sleaze infested and some might say politically minded rock n' roll to the masses. With all the usual references to Iggy and the Stooges (a personal love hate reference between Dickie and the music press), I will skate around the similarities as they have all been said before and get down to the real meat and bones of the album review. What 'IV' brings forth is just angst filled rock that takes a hold of the listener by the short and curlies and won't let go. The album opens up with the delightfully titled ‘I Don’t Give A Fuck Where The Eagle Flies’ and straight away the band come out swinging with a toned down guitar, deep bass attack with Dickie his usual gritty self. A track that really gets the album going. Things carry on at a similar pace with ‘Uncle Sam And Me’, a track that reminds me very much like Rocket From the Crypt, with its rocking beat and thumping rhythm section. The band brings things down a touch with ‘Captain America’, a song that Alice Cooper could have written when he’s in his sarcastic mode, a real down n' dirty one this one. The beat is picked up once more with ‘White Trash’, a track that pays homage to that all American institution. The band takes things to another level (not up but down) with another charmingly titled track this time ‘Fuck You’. If you think this is a dirty as it gets then your simply mistaken, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Things really get going with ‘The Year Of The Maggot’, a real punk fest this one that stampedes along with some ear piercing guitars thrown in for good measure. The album switches once again with the deeply disturbing ‘Officer Please’ before returning the punky feel with ‘Roy’. Then it's time for my favourite track off the album the catchy guitar ridden ‘That’s What Rock And Roll Can Do’. The very abstract feel of the album continues with the downtrodden tones of ‘The Stalker’ before picking things up again with ‘Everybody’s Fucked Her’. Another heart felt song(!!!) from the masters of the unassuming lyric. The album
closes with the heavy tones of ‘I’ll Die Tomorrow’ and rounds off
an album that won't win any PC awards, but shows what The Moistboyz are
all about. To sum up this album it's perhaps best described as
punk Art-Nuevo at its finest. |
