Artist: Monster Magnet
   Title: Monolithic Baby
   Label: SPV Records

With so many of today's young bands wailing about how life has been so bad to them, with most of them not even gone through puberty never mind life, Monster Magnet return to show them what life is all about and how to have fun with it no matter what.

Doing what Monster Magnet does best is a modern day psychedelic sound with heavy seventies sounding guitars and that’s what you get on ‘Monolithic Baby’. When the opening track has the title ‘Slut Machine’ you know what you’re in for. No nonsense rock n’ roll for a non specific genre that will appeal to some but not to others.

But after all that’s exactly what Monster Magnet are all about. Less attitude and a whole lot more talent. ‘Supercruel’ the second track is more of the same rhythmic guitar beats with the heavy drum beat just pounding away in the background which has a definite Zodiac Mindwarp feel about it.

The reference to Zodiac Mindwarp is a good guide to what sort of feel ‘Monolithic Baby’ has throughout, as many tracks on the album have that same vibe about them. ‘Unbroken (Hotel Baby)’ is the first single off the album has some fantastic guitar riffs on it and with the thumping chorus is one of the highlights on the album.

Other highlights include the excellent ‘Radiation Day’ with it’s almost Zack Wilde guitar riff, the more mellow style of ‘There's No Way Out Of Here’, originally recorded by Unicorn but featured on Dave Gilmour’s first solo album in 1978 is refreshingly updated.

Altogether an entertaining album and if you want something different then I highly recommend Monolithic Baby.
