My 21 Grams are a band that impressed me a lot at a recent gig this year when they supported The Glitterati at Legends in Newcastle. The band have a really heavy guitar influenced sound that the other bands that night just didn't have and that’s what I need in my rock n' roll these days, some mean guitars backed by a thunderous rhythm section, plus a vocalist who can not only sing, but knows how to command the stage and that’s what new frontman Alex brings to the band. The band was kind enough to send me this promo copy of some of their songs so I in kind have taken time out to review it. Things get off to a great start with ‘Blackout’ and straight away those heavy bass and pounding drums come into play. This backed by the streaming guitars make this track a great example of the whole My 21 Grams sound. The heavy tones continue with ‘Alkaline’, which was the bands first single release and once again really shows what this band are all about. Great riffs, big rhythm section and an all together real big sound. In my eyes this is exactly what it takes to influence the bigger record companies who are looking to tap into a young bands potential. ‘Burning Butterflies’ isn’t some namby pamby track as the title insinuates, this is the band showing they can be as sleazy as the next guy, with this punk driven tuned down guitar offering. ‘A Little Piece Of Me’ opens up with a jazz style bass but quickly the tuned down guitars take over to fuel another slice of pure aggression driven metal. The final
track ‘Kerosene’ lives up to the old adage of leaving the best till
last. This hard driven riff spewn track is heavy and melodic at the same
time, with just a touch of teenage angst thrown in. The guitar
sound on this track is just immense and the swings between the high and
low points are just very U2, this is probably the most commercial track
of the EP. |
