When I’m walking down the
streets and looking into the shop windows, seeing the 'latest' fashions
on show, then I come home and listen to the news of recession, strikes
and rising fuel costs then I can say without any shadow of a doubt that
the 80’s are making a come back. And if the fashions and the
news are harking back to the 80’s then why not the music? Hell
I’d be all for it!
Another band who are all for bringing back those sleaze and hair metal days are Sweden’s Nasty Idols. A band who were once at the forefront of the glam scene in their native Sweden, before deciding to call it a day in 1995. Fast-forward to 2006 and the band reformed for their 'Rejects On The Road' Tour. Now in 2009 the band are back with a new album ‘Boy Town’. Right from the opener ‘Rock Out’ I just totally fell in love with this band. They took me back to my hair metal days when men were men, lipstick and spandex men mind you and we just loved it. The album continues it’s sleaze driven vibe with ‘Boys Town’, which reminds me very much of Faster Pussycat meets Pretty Boy Floyd. The music of the Floyd from Rickki Dahl (drums), Dick Qwarfort (bass) and Peter Espinoza (guitar) and the vocals of Faster P from Andy Pierce. That up tempo 80’s vibe continues with the rifftastic ‘Method To My Madness’, with Espinoza laying it down big time while the rhythm section thunders down in true sleaze style. The tempo is brought down a little with the darker edged ‘Scar For Life’ before bringing things back up a notch with the excellent ‘Nite Like This’. A slow smouldering glam ballad very much in the Dogs D’Amour vein. Then it’s back to the slung down sleaze with ‘Crashlanding’ and ’48 Hours’, (no not he Pretty Boy Floyd song!), a much heavier sounding song that shows the band aren’t dwelling too much on the 80’s vibe and are dragging glam back into the here and now with a bang. Just as I say that it’s back to that Faster Pussycat feel with ‘7 Year Itch’ before the anthemic ‘Evil One’. This song is top drawer sleaze and is one of my personal favourites off the album. The driven guitars of the fantastic ‘It’s Not Love’ are just tremendous and the band show again their ability to take that glam vibe and bring it crashing into 2009. The same can also be said about ‘Need The Nite’. The album closes in style
with ‘It Ain’t Easy’, another massive stadium rock anthem that
rounds off what is a great album and this is one band that should have
international appeal, especially to all the glam fans around. I
know there are still many out there waiting for this type of music to
make it's way back and I'm quite proud to say I'm one of them! |
