'Oceans Apart' is the latest EP from Dublin based instrumentalists Parhelia and is the follow up the their 'First Light' EP released last year. The band's use of melody and imagination in their musical conception is quite astounding, without a vocalist the bands music really sweeps you across the great musical divide. Things get underway with ‘Lights In The Distance’, a sophisticated mellow track that captures the shear essence of the whole Parhelia experience, especially the flowing layered guitar sequences courtesy of Greg Clarke and Diarmuid Shore. The same flowing guitar sound is carried on into ‘Hindsight’, an equally majestic mood ridden piece. The band continue to let their music wash over you like the gentle passing of the tides with the title track ‘Oceans Apart’, a multi layered array of bass and guitar all capped on a solid drum beat. ‘Summer Fades’ picks up the tempo just a touch without spoiling the whole ambiance of the EP. This track once again is structured around the soaring guitar sound. Things come to an abrupt end with the soar away ‘Storm Warning’, another superb piece of musical fortitude by a band that obviously work hard at their music. This is
another great EP that like their previous 'First Light’ is one you
want to sit down in a darkened room with a glass of your favourite
tipple and your headphones on, and just let your troubles just wash away
for the duration of this EP and if that doesn’t work then listen to it
again! |
