Have
you ever listened to a song or a record and wondered what's the point?
In a time when a lot of Indie and Rock songs in particular tend to
revolve around depressing subjects and teenage angst, it's nice to hear
an upbeat cheery song for a change. In fact with this 4 track EP what
you've got is not only 1 cheery track but a grand total of 4. What a
delight to have this land on my doormat I can tell you!
Hailing from New York The Pillcrushers are a bright new band that
although well known to the locals, have yet to break out into the
international market as yet. However with an EP as promising as this
one, no doubt you'll soon be hearing the name mentioned a lot further
away than it is at present.
The opening track 'Is It True' is laid back and relaxed and is like a
friendly face offering you a glass of wine after a hard day at the
office. It's soothing, it's relaxing, it's like liquid gold pouring into
your soul. It has quite a sixties hippy feel to it with it's 'boop boop,
boop boop' chorus. Unobtrusive it grows on you very quickly.
The second track on the EP reminds me a little of The Beatles. I kid you
not. Great twin guitars that feature strongly but don't smother the
songs. Harmonies that blend together into a gorgeous smooth mix. It's
only when we get onto the third track off the EP, 'When I Noticed' that
I realise the full potential of these guys. If Crowded House had been
around in the heady days of the Summer of Love then this is how they'd
sound. Modern day fans of Enuff ZNuff would also do well to check this
band out. They're not glam - they're just gorgeous.
Finishing off with the gentle 'Everyday' this is one band that are well
worth checking out. Just how special their music is is hard to explain.
Check them out on their website and see what you think. They are a rock
band, OK so I doubt they wear hoodies and baggy skater pants, but the
music they create is certainly 'boppy melodic rock'. It brought a little
ray of sunshine into my day and a welcome delight to my ears. I will
definitely be watching out for their debut album when it's released.
The band describe themselves as ... 'a bit like if your threw Mathew
Sweet, Tom Petty, Badfinger and Wilco in a blender'. And to quote Time
Out in New York ... 'they're exactly what you want from a night out in a
smoky club'. Well I could do without the smoke but this band certainly
know how to set the scene. No matter how tired I was at the end of the
day, I'd never be too tired to go see these guys perform.
