The
name Pink Cream 69 conjures up all sort of 80's glam pictures in the
mind, but the band itself are far more diverse than the name suggests.
Led by Brit David Readman, the band deliver no nonsense Rock N Roll.
As a band they have been together in their present form since 1994, when
then lead singer Andi Derris left the band to join Helloween.
The bands latest album ‘Thunderdome’ sees the band progress to
another level. The opening salvo of the title track 'Thunderdome'
must be played on full volume, as it's an immense start to the album
proper after the intro 'The Last Stance'.
The quality continues throughout the entire album. The next track
'Gods Come Together' is another fine example of the band’s own brand
of no-nonsense kick-ass rock, with the guitars ruling this track with
their infectious riffs. A true monster of a track.
'Carnaby Road' is another thunderous rock anthem that tells of the pit
falls of this industry and its shortcomings, and that if you want that
dream you have to make it happen.
The intensity of the album continues with 'Here I Am', another future
classic with the powerhouse vocals of Mr. Readman really shining through
on this track.
The pace slows down on the next track 'That Was Yesterday’, which can
only be described as a power ballad, (a phrase I hate to use but until
something better comes along I will have to use it). Then the pace once
again picks up with 'Shelter', another superb track where the guitars
really lift the track to a higher level.
'Retro Lullaby' is pure Melodic Rock at its best with its heavy bass
lines, seminal guitar melodies, and just a hint of keyboards. The
change in tempo in the middle of the track really sets this apart from
the rest of the tracks on the album and makes it simply exquisite.
Even the beefed up cover of the classic 'My Sharona' sounds simply
marvellous. Then it’s time for my favourite track on the album,
'As Deep As I Am'. I pay homage to the song writing quality
and musicianship of the band.
'Another Wrong Makes Right' goes all guns blazing from the off and hits
you hard and fast. The next track 'See Your Face' brings you down to
earth and lets you settle down and take in what you have heard, and to
contemplate the splendour that is Pink Cream 69.
‘Carved Into stone’ which is the bonus track on my copy, is another
one of those power ballad thingy's that allows David Readman to lead the
way with his majestic vocal style.
If you haven’t heard anything by Pink Cream 69 before, then I
recommend you check out with this release. If you like what you
hear on this album, then why not go one step further and check them out
on 'Endangered' or 'Sonic Dynamite', because very soon I suspect
they’ll have you hooked just like they’ve got me.
