The
cover say's Poison, indeed the photo's on the sleeves show the whole
band, however this doesn't sound like a Poison album to me, not one bit.
I know all bands grow and change in the course of time but what we have
here is more like a throwaway album full of rejected Samantha 7 and
Brett Michael solo tracks.
This may well be an album that obsessed fans of Poison, Brett Michaels
solo material and Samantha 7 will enjoy. But for a large part it is
sounds to me that Brett has brought along songs from his solo project to
include on this album, and CC has brought along a few songs that weren't
quite good enough for the Samantha 7 debut album.
I can't remember a time when CC has taken such an active part as lead
singer on past Poison albums that he has on this one. However Poison to
me is Brett Michaels doing all the lead vocals. He is what makes Poison
songs Poison songs. Don't get me wrong, I loved CC in Samantha 7, in
fact I was lucky enough to catch them on tour in the UK and met CC. The
gig was one of the most enjoyable gigs I'd been to in a long time
because it really got the crowd going in a feelgood/fun kinda way. First
time I'd ever met CC in person and I have to admit that man is a
livewire that really does get high on life itself.
Brett Michaels also impressed me greatly when he released the 'Letter
from Death Row' album. Both the film and album surprised a lot of
people, me included, at just how talented this man is when he sets his
mind to it.
But the bottom line is that all those Poison fans out there, me
included, have waited a hell of a long time for a full length album with
all new songs on it. I ordered a copy of this on the strength of the
band being one of the hottest acts the rock world has ever seen in the
last 15+ years. I hadn't even heard one track of clip from this album, I
truly thought I didn't need to as I was sure the guys would be bringing
forth a blistering new offering that would blow my mind.
Pah! This album is mediocre at best. The songs are the sort of thing
you'd expect from a band just starting out who weren't quite sure which
direction they wanted to take and were simply testing the water with
some safe tracks. Safe is the key word here. There's nothing on this
album that drives me wild or makes me want to play it over and over
again. Very disappointing.
If you have money to burn and fancy adding another CD to your Poison
collection then go ahead and buy it, however if you're looking for
something you'll get your money's worth out of by listening to a lot
then go check out some other band/album.
It's like listening to something with earplugs in. You hear the words,
you hear the noise, but you lose all the crisp sound, the very thing
that can make or break a recording. Listen to 'Livin' In The Now' and it
screams out Samantha 7. Turn to Stupid, Stoned & Dumb' and it has
rejected Death Row scrawled all over it. Is this really the best you
guys could come up with?
You really got our hopes up with the handful of new tracks on 'Power to
the People', only to dash them again with this clumsy collection of
reject songs. Poison for me has Brett Michaels as lead singer on ALL the
songs. It has a crisp clean sound that sends shivers down your spine.
The drums aren't muggy and distorted and the guitars are a mixture of
blistering riffs and catchy hooks. All of which are not present on this
album. Bottom line is if I hadn't thrown the receipt away when I bought
this CD I would have took it back and asked for my money back. Next time
I'll think long and hard before I consider buying another Poison
release. Words can't describe just how ripped off I feel by this
release.
