One of the highlights of
2007 was Milan Polak’s album 'Straight' and to say that it is still on
regular rotation around the office is no word of a lie. Time will
tell whether this new album will replace it or rather sit side by side
to enjoy the rotation it's predecessor receives.
Once again Polak has
taken the world we know today and given it his own perspective as he
writes about the modern day tragedies of mass
media manipulation and other social atrocities that have made this the
world according to TV and Newspapers, where celebrity means more than
the your fellow man. This
album has a heavier vibe and due to the subject matter invoked in
Polak’s lyrics this suits it down to the ground. As the album
opens up with the title track ‘Murphy’s Law’, this is plain to
hear for those of you who are already familiar with ‘Straight’. The
albums heavier groove shows the talent behind the man as the album
continues with the humungous ‘No God’, a great riff laden monster
full of the angst and the fortitude of Polak’s conviction to his view
of the world today as a great social commentator. Polak
brings a little Eastern spice to proceedings with ‘Inner Truth’,
again the much heavier bass vibe really brings out the depth of the
track and Polak’s own guitar sound, both making this a really great
track. The
album isn’t all out heavy though, there are a few more mellow moments
and one of those is ‘Losing Me’. A mid tempo rocker on which
Polak’s vocals just shine. However, that mellow moment is short
lived as Polak really lights things up with one of the many highlights
of the album ‘Wannabes’, a great track which just rocks and the solo
mid track is simply sublime. Things
get a little heavy and a little funky with ‘The Opposite Of Love’
before the excellent ‘Sheeple’. A mix of prog/funk fusion and
good old-fashioned hard rock a great track that really outlines why
Polak is held in such high esteem in the guitar community. The
listener is brought back to earth with the gentle rocker ‘Torn’, a
great track that any Melodic/AOR Rock band would be proud of, again with
the guitar work featured being just superb. Just think of a modern
day Reo Speedwagon or Kansas and you won't be a million miles away from
the vibe of this one. It's
back to the more rockier stuff with another of my favourites ‘Alien
Nation’, a straight up Hard Rock track. The tempo is continued
with the splendid ‘Fake’, before the album closes in style with my
track of the album ‘The Mystery Of Life’, which once again features
a few prog elements which are thrown into the mix for this song and all
of which go to round off what is another superb album from Mr Polak and
one that showcases perfectly just what a real talent the man is. |
