When
the union of David Reece and Martin Kronlund got together in 2008 for
the excellent Gypsy Rose album 'Another World’,
a friendship blossomed and respect was born which later bore fruit with
both working together on the new Bangalore Choir album ‘Cadence’ and
the remixed ‘On Target’, two great albums by the way, now the
pair are united for the first Reece/Kronlund album ‘Solid’. As
the title suggests this is pure, solid, Hard Rock, with Reece’s unmistakable
vocals mixed with Kronlund's guitars and bass, with Hans In’t Zandt
lending his drumming talents to the mix. As
well as these three talented gents doing the business musically and
vocally, the album has also brought forth the writing talents of Jon
Wilde, along with Tommy ‘I’ll Play For The Love Of It’ Denander,
Andy Susemih, Rikard Quist, Brynn Arens and Christian Tolle. So
with a wealth of talent behind this album you’d expect something
special and you’d be right. This is a great album that mixes it up from
the hard rocking to the more gentle moments, an album that has something
for
all. Things
get underway with the Denander co-penned ‘My Angel Wears White’ and
what as start, as Kronlund unleashes a killer opening riff that Reece
follows up with a massive vocal. This is the perfect start to this
album and really
sets you up for the rest of the album. The
hard rockin’ continues with the riff fuelled ‘Samurai’, a track
with more than its fair share of Eastern promise before the pace is
slowed down just touch with the moving ‘Could This Be Madness’.
This
is where Reece shows off the Melodic Rock side of his vocal, all the
while backed by the stunning guitars of Kronlund and the majestic
drumming of In’t Zandt. It's
back up to full throttle once more with the excellent ‘Animals And
Cannibals’, featuring big licks from Kronlund which drive this one ever forward,
then it's back to the Melodic Rock vibe with the haunting ‘Remember You’,
before Kronlund unleashes the six string viper once more for the
excellent ‘Paint The Mirror Black’, which has to one of my favourites
off the album. This song rocks with more groove than is surely legal. After
the stormer 'Paint The Mirror Black' it's time to get your breath back with two gentler rockers
in the shape of ‘I Would’ and ‘Edge Of Heaven’, then it time to bring a little
blues into the mix with ‘Magic Pudding’ (wicked name by the way!) before the album closes with
a mighty bang, with my favourite track off the album the all guns blazin
‘The Dead Shall Walk The Earth’, which caps off a really great album
that manages to mix the best of Bangalore Choir and Dogface, yet remain
individual at the same time. So as the title suggests, this is a 'SOLID'
album and I can't wait for the next Reece Kronlund release.
