Artist: Skinflick
   Title: Two Ton Loser
   Label: Zero Tolerance

This must be my lucky week for top quality releases by bright new hopefuls. Skinflick are one of those bands that right from the start of the beginning of the first track you instantly know whether you're going to love them or loathe them. I don't think there's going to be any in between with a band like this. I for one was absolutely delighted right from the start of this EP.

This may sound a tad strange to some of the people who know me well because this isn't normally the type of music I would instantly be associated with. However let me tell you, it's one hell of a worthy edition into my collection and one that will be regularly played on my CD player.

Fans of Dark Glam bands such as All The Pretty Horses and Braindance would do well to check this band out. The songs are both haunting and powerful at the same time. They paint dark twisted pictures in your mind and change their course many times throughout each song. The production on this EP is second to none and I only wish more bands had the opportunity to release such high quality offerings. They really are to be envied for what they have achieved on this release.

Raw passion and dark seductive tones are the order of the day. My favourite out of the 3 tracks is the opening track 'Belief' which reminds me almost of some of the marvellous hits Sisters Of Mercy used to put out. They were leaders in their day at what they did and in many ways Skinflick mirror that essence but for a new generation of creatures of the night.

It's hard enough to write a decent tune at the best of times as well as keeping the listeners interest going throughout the whole of the song. But this is something that the band have managed to do magnificently with this track in particular. It may be the best part of 8 minutes long, but you know what?, if you heard this played in a club you wouldn't get sick of dancing to it half way through.

'Belief' can be described as haunting, catchy, addictive, but with a dark and twisted vicious end to it. 'Two Ton Loser', the title of the EP and also the second song featured on it, has more a heavy industrial sound to it. Hard pounding beats that would definitely sound great in a lot of new age Goth clubs. It makes good use of samples which combined with the disturbing devilish whispers of an almost Marilyn Manson type character, erupt into tormented screams that burrow deep into your mind. It screws with your senses!

Lastly, we have 'Burns Bright'. The first half of this dark melody includes some wonderful female vocals which give the song an altogether deeper dimension. Guitars scream out as this gentle, yet strong, woman's voice screams out ... 'watch the sunset of my life'. I'd really like to see this dimension brought into a few more of their songs as they progress, develop and grow as a band.

How to describe this blend of music is difficult, but I know the new techno Goths will love it, EBM fans and even power metal fans will find something on here to wet their appetite. Perhaps the helpful hand of Nigel Wingrove, famous for styling Cradle Of Filth, has had more of an influence on this band than is first realised. Whoever, or whatever is pushing them forward, they seem to be doing a grand job. If you're a creature of the night then check these out. They're not for the faint hearted, but they do promise to excite and delight the senses. This EP has teeth, balls and growls in the night!
