Last
year the Tygers release a celebration of the 'Wildcat' album and received
much praise not only for the songs that have stood the test of time, but
also to show the world that the Tygers of today have more bite than ever
before. I like many journalists have put this down to the bands current
line-up, with legend and founding member Rob Weir taking the band to new
levels of excellence by bringing in the Italian songster Jacapo
(Jaco) Meille, who really brings something very special to these classic
songs, along with Dean Robertson, Brian West and Craig Ellis. With the likes of 'Hellbound' sounding as fresh as if it had been written yesterday, the old
version rocked but this version just blows that away. Jaco is just
superb and as I have said many times before, he’s just brings out the best in these
classics and makes them his own. It was if he was meant to sing them. If anyone doubts
the quality of the guy you just have to listen to the awesome
‘Mirror’, on which he gives one Robert Plant a run for his money.
I
was so blown away by this version I had to dig out the original 'Spellbound' album,
(yes the vinyl), to compare the two, and believe me you won't believe the
difference and how great this one sounds now. The same can be
same about the next song ‘Tiger Bay’, the arrangements on the guitars
really bring this one to life as Weir and Robertson exchange licks like
two kids sharing an ice lolly on a hot summers day. The celebration of
'Spellbound' comes to a close with Jaco again bringing his A-game to
‘Don’t Stop By’, while Weir and Robertson gel superbly on this one,
really beefing this one up. The band are like a
fine wine they just keep getting better with age, (Mr Weir should know
what I mean!), and I just love what Jaco brings to the band and long may
it continue. I can't wait to see the guys back on stage again,
although I’m
still waiting for the band to bring 'Paris by Air' back to life...
or do I
have to wait for 'The Cage' Sessions for that? |
