Artist: Various Artists
   Title: It's A Misery Business
   Label: Rhino Records

Despite this being a blatant cash-in by the record label it’s a welcome change that someone has decided to put together a compilation of anti-love songs in time for that most annoying of Hallmark-created non-holidays known as Valentine’s Day.  Given that every year many of us have to suffer that nauseating feeling of seeing that same rehashed compilation of soppy rubbish being peddled everywhere we go, it’s somewhat of a pleasant surprise that this year, there’s a nod given to those of us who aren’t taken in by Hallmark’s tosh.

There’s something here for everyone as everything from the soft-rock of Nickelback to the heavy metal of Slipknot via the emo sing-a-longs of Paramore are covered.  This is not your typical Valentine’s Day compilation and opening track ‘Something In Your Mouth’ is not your typical Nickelback song.  Banned from UK radio presumably for its subject matter, the song is a down and dirty rocker that reminds us how great ogling a good-looking stripper can be and perfectly sets the anti-love tone of the album by making sure that it’s not all doom and gloom that we’re in for here.

Unfortunately however, it is mostly doom and gloom that we’re in for.  Fun songs about meaningless sex are in the minority here as the troop of Kerrang-friendly emo bands are somewhat over-represented and constitute the majority of the songs on the album and while the songs are obviously not out of place on a compilation such as this, it would’ve been better if those of us who are anti-Valentine’s Day weren’t represented by quite so many teen-angst, home-alone whinefests (and the decision to close the album with the oddly-titled ‘Leeds United’ by Amanda Palmer is as perplexing as the song itself).

Rhino are making no bones here about their target audience and they’ve gone for it full force with every recent Kerrang cover star on show here from Kill Hannah and Elliot Minor to the downright awful Panic At The Disco and Madina Lake and all in-between.  A good idea in theory but unlikely to be bought by many people without a huge fringe over the age of 15.
