'In The
Eye Of Time' is one of those albums that very nearly vanished into
obscurity. Originally an independent release it wasn’t until Vox Tempus
signed to Angelmilk Records that it was time to re-master said album and
give it the full production and attention a veritable classic deserves. The band itself features a wealth of talent with Ray Mantor on guitar, Jim Turba on bass, Eric Ragno on keys, Dan Reed on vocals and special guest drummer Gregg Bissonette. The album get's underway with ‘For Every Life’ and instantly the quality of musicianship involved in the album shines through, with Bissonette’s unmistakable drumming and Ragno’s unequalled genius on keys, but it’s the guitars of Mantor and Reeds vocals that really stand out on this opener. With the opener setting so many standards I was wondering if the album had peaked too early in my mind, but my fears were unfounded as the album continues with ‘Escape’. This song is more guitar oriented than the opener, although equally as impressive as it basically carries on where the opener left off. And so the trend continues throughout the album with track after track unveiling something special, right from ‘Broken’, which is a more gentile ballad with Ragno’s keyboards at the forefront of the track, then there’s a more traditional Progressive Melodies of ‘Forshadows’, which is a real treat for all the those that enjoy a little atmospheric keys, at which Ragno excels on this instrumental masterstroke. Then it's time for a couple of seven minute wonders. Firstly the excellent ‘Revelations’, then another favourite of mine the superlative ‘What About’, featuring a little more heady bass lines than 'Revelations', this one has a little more edge for me. Speaking of a more edgy sound, you really should check out the track of the album ‘Voices Of Time’, this one has it all, great licks, soaring keys, big challenging bass and faultless drums. It's a real gem of an instrumental. The epic nature of some of the tracks on the album is exceeded by the thirteen-minute plus ‘Love, Lies & Treason’. Another gem of a track that takes the listener to a land across psychedelic skies and over rainbow coloured seas on a multi layered progressive thirteen minute carpet ride of pleasure. After that you’d think there would be an anticlimax but this album doesn't have any anticlimactic moments as it comes to a close in style with the Melodic ballad ‘Steal The Moment’. It's hard to see why this album didn’t receive the acknowledgement it deserved when first released, but at least the record will be set straight with this fantastic re-mastered version.
