They
came out of the blue in the latter part of the 80’s bringing a whole
new style of rock to the masses, they were Prime Movers who gave lessons in
Back Seat Education and later helped Alice Cooper Feed My Frankenstein,
they are of course Zodiac Mindwarp And The Love Reaction. Now the
band are back in 2010 with a new album entitled ‘We Are Volsung’, no
they haven’t gone all German Industrial Metal, far from it, they have
returned with their groove filled trash rock that made them one of most
original and most stand out bands of the late 80’s. With
the return of 80’s fashion to the cat walks why not a return to the
music that drove the world as much as the fashions of the time. Taking
on their inspirations from the Northern Mythology the band are hitting
harder than Thor’s hammer and are about to invade the very hearts of
mankind with a Bezerka street rock assault worthy of the Mindwarp name. The
album opens up with ‘Stark Von Oben’ and instantly I’m reminded
why I loved these guys. No bullshit just grooved filled rock with leader
of the pack Zodiac Mindwarp’s unmistakable vocals taking the lead, all
the while Colbalt Stargazer throws out the dirty groove filled licks as Jack Shitt and The Cat pound out a roguish back beat on bass and
drums. This is
good time rock n' roll of the highest calibre and this brought to the
forefront with the title track ‘We Are Volsung’, you can almost see
the halls of Valhalla lined with wall to wall Marshall amps. The
groove filled rockers keep coming with the high octane ‘We Ride’ as
The Cat gets this started, then Jack Shitt delivers a chunky bass line
with Stargazer laying down those unmistakable licks, before Mindwarp
rises to the top like cream to milk as only he does, with a gritty
vocal. There's
no stopping for breath as it's sleaze driven rock all the way with the
fantastic ‘Tree Rider’ and ‘White Trash’, before one of my
favourites off the album the superb ‘Don’t Touch My Guitar’.
This is pure Love Reaction right down to the last note. Big rhythms wrapped
around a fiery riff from Stargazer, great stuff! The
licks come thick and fast from the off on ‘Lucille’ and the almost
Metal tones of ‘Die Pretty’, with a bigger bass line running right through
this one and a tuned out riff on this modern day anthem. Things
get a little Stoner Rock with ‘Key To Your Heart’ before the album
closes with the monstrous bluesy feel ‘Kill Me A Mockingbird’.
This
is a great return for a band that don’t bow down to trends or flights of
fancy, they just play dirty, loud, rock n' roll and we love them for it. |
