Although these
black leather clad gothic vamps have been around since the 1990's, it's
only been this past year that I've stumbled across them, and oh what a
find! Just when I thought the world of bikers jackets and
lashings of black eye-liner had all but disappeared, these glamour gods make an
appearance.
Looking like the bastard sons of the Ramones but with the pout of Billy
Idol, The 69 Eyes actually sound as good as they look. They have the
image, they have the looks, they have the sound and the bodies to die for.
Perhaps this is why during the live portion of this DVD there are more
mother/daughter combo's down the front of the crowd than you tend to get
at your average Goth gig.
With more females per square inch than your average Chippendale show, it's
clear from the off that whereas HIM appeal to both sexes and generally the
mid teen market these days, these bad boys of Goth are just what the
post-puberty big girls have been waiting for.
Filmed in November 2002 in Tavasta, Finland,
'Helsinki Vampires'
includes not only the bands live performance of the whole 17 track show,
but also the commercial videos released for 8 of their top hit singles.
Of course it's only been the last few years that the likes of HIM and The
Rasmus have emerged into the wider market place and if this DVD is
anything to go by, it won't be long before The 69 Eyes follow in their
footsteps and cause a stir in the rock clubs.
The live portion of this DVD is actually very well shot with good clear
shots of what's going on with all the band members throughout the songs,
including the drummer, which makes a nice change because, they always tend
to get left out on these things with the main attention being lavished on
the players at the front of the stage. Overall there's a good
mixture of angles of all the different band members, intermingled with
crowd shots, to give you the feeling you really wish you'd been at that
gig.
Thanks to the wonders of modern technology you don't have to take my word
for how good these guys sound (and look). A few clicks on the
internet and you'll be able to check them out yourselves, something which
I actively encourage you to do in fact.
If you like your Goth Rock deep, dark and deliciously gorgeous with
flaming guitar licks and wicked sing-a-long chorus's, then this could very
well be your next favourite band. But don't just take my word for it,
get clicking and see for yourself.
