On the eve of a new album entitled 'The Crest' Axel Rudi Pell releases a live DVD from the bands conquering set at last years Rock Of Ages festival in Rottenburg on July 31st. Those of you who haven’t seen the man and his band live in action then you’ve got to purchase this DVD, not only is it a true recording (no overdubs) of the band's performance that day, but it also highlights what a great live band they are. And what a band Pell has surrounded himself with! Leading the way is the powerhouse rhythm section of Mike Terrana on drums and Volker Krawczak on bass, the flamboyant tickler of ivories Ferdy Doernberg and the excellent vocalist Johnny Gioeli, as tight a quintet of musicians as you’ll see anywhere on the planet. The set on the day was 80 minutes long and that’s exactly what you get here, 80 superb Melodic Metal minutes with a set that covers some of Pell’s finest moments and a few of my personal favourites from recent years as well. The likes of ‘Tear Down The Walls’, ‘Rock The Nation’ and the excellent ‘Mystica’ are just a few of the highlights. There is even an old school drum solo from Terrana, which highlights why he’s regarded my many as one of the best Metal drummers around. The event was filmed by ten cameras and with the sun going down the light show is just excellent, the sound is top notch, you can't fault it at all. There have been some dire live DVD’s over the years but this isn’t one of them, this release highlights what a great live band Pell has and what a great guitarist he is. I
just hope that someday he will muster a tour that includes the UK
because there is an army of fans who’d love to see him return to these
shores. |
