Germany's SPV/Steamhammer records have for many years been one of the premier rock music labels with some of the biggest names in rock on their roster and with this new DVD release, some of those now household names have had their videos showcased. Unlike some video compilations SPV haven’t gone for some of the obvious choices for videos and have put together a package of tunes that you the viewer actually wants see on DVD, as well as some classics and some brand new stuff too. The entire package not only contains 31 videos with a total running time of 2 hours, but also 1,000 song samples, a DVD Rom section for iPods, but also artist discographies, and if you like something physical to look at there’s also 16 page booklet that lets you know what album each track is taken from! Quite an impressive bundle all told. The video package itself has something for every taste, such is the varied band roster they have on their books, from glam to thrash, from power metal to hard rock, SPV cover all genres. Some highlights for me have to be the classic Motorhead cover of the Sex Pistols ‘God Save The Queen’ including a Queen look-a-like, and even Lemmy sings the blues on ‘Whorehouse Blues’, a video that truly has to be seen to believed as he and the rest of Motorhead tone things down a touch. Skid Rows ‘Ghost’ is one of my favourites off the Thickskin album and this is my first viewing of the video for ‘Ghost’ so that’s a big plus for me. Saxons haunting ‘Beyond The Grave’ and Helloween’s ‘Mrs God’ are another couple of favourites of mine that I was really pleased to see were included on this compilation. Kamelot’s
masterpiece ‘March Of Mephisto and Iced Earths ‘The Reckoning’ are another
two massive videos, but the DVD has such a selection of bands that there
is something for everyone and if you can't find something on this DVD that
floats your boat, then you want to get out more because there is so much
metal around these days its hard not to ignore the fact. |
