The rock fans in Newcastle have been
truly blessed this week as Trillians Rock Bar returns to its former glory
by having not just one night of kick ass rock n' roll, but three nights in
the same week!
The first of these show is that of Dirty
Rig led by former Warrior Soul front-man Kory Clarke. But before
they were unleashed on the Newcastle fans, it was debut time at Trillians
for one of Sheffield’s finest exports since stainless steel, the Glam Punk
foursome Disarm. A band who they themselves describe as 'four
deviant tramps'.
However, these four deviants can
certainly rock, it may be the bands first appearance in Newcastle, but
this is a band that I have seen on numerous occasions and each time I see
them they surpass themselves, and tonight's performance was no different.
Opening a kick-ass set with ‘Got A
Problem’ it was obvious the band were really up for the gig, with vocalist
and guitarist Brad firing on all cylinders. The band never relented
with their sleaze punk rock onslaught as they continued with ‘Faster,
Faster, Kill’, a song Brad describes as one about sex, drugs and
prostitution (all things that these good home loving boys steer clear of
I’m sure!!!!!).

The band never seemed to come up for
breath as they burst into ‘She’s My Disease’ and the excellent ‘Getaway’.
The set continued to impress with 'To
Much Is Never Enough’ and a song that was the bands first venture into
writing, ‘Tomorrow We Kill, Tomorrow We Die’. Two awesome songs that
really rock big style.
Then it was time for Brad to lay down the
guitar as he took up the mike for ‘Grease Proof’, another full on glam
punk attack that really got the crowd going.
The set was brought to a close with a
song for all the drinkers in the crowd ‘Black Can Man’, which ended
another impressive full on rock show by a very young and very impressive
band. Hopefully if the gods are smiling on us the next time we see
this band will be as the support to The Glitterati and Gemini Five at
Junction 7 in Nottingham later this year.

With the crowd still rocking after
Disarm, it was time to keep this rock n' roll juggernaut of a party coming
with New York’s Dirty Rig.
As the band came on stage it was plain to
see that Kory was hyped up for the gig and the rest of the band weren’t
far behind him. The band got things off to fantastic start with
‘Drunk Again’, a track that highlights Kory’s rasping vocals and with
guitarist Chas Banellis on fire, it was clear that this was gonna be one
hell of a show.
The boys continued with Kory asking for a
big shout out of "F**K YOU BUCKSHOT!" from the crowd who happily obliged,
then it was into ‘Suck It’, another hard hitting rock song that went down
well with the audience, as did all of them if I’m honest.
The gloves were certainly off as far as
Kory and the rest of the band were concerned as they carried on with
‘Thrown Down’, a song full of that NY City gutter attitude.
As the band went into ‘Dogs’ bass player
Buckshot invited the more shy members of the crowd to venture forward and
fill some of the spaces at the front of the stage, rapidly shuffling
forward the crowd happily obliged once again.

Then it was time for probably the slowest
song of the set the excellent ‘Cities’, one that Kory dedicated to all the
people who walked their own city streets and are ridiculed for being who
they are.
Quick as you like it was soon back to the
rockier side of the band with the oddly titled ‘Pennsyltucky’, a track
that rocks big style with its dark grunge undertones of Buckshot’s bass
lines and Chas’s hard hitting guitar riffs. This is one hell of a
monster of a live song.
The intensity never eased for a moment
with these guys as it was straight into ‘Hitch Hiker’, a song written by
Chas and featuring some awesome lick by himself and Buckshot, but also
some rampaging drums by Dave Ardolina.

The set was concluded by the title track
of the bands new album ‘Rock Did It’, a track that reminds of Kory’s days
with Warrior Soul and rounded off a great night of full on kick ass rock
by both bands.
As a final note I have to say it was great to see the
whole band come straight out after the gig to hang and chat with the fans.
Not only that but how Kory didn't end up with writers cramp after signing
so many Warrior Soul cd's is anyone's guess. Someone get that man a
beer! Excellent band, excellent show, excellent support act too! |
