A near
capacity Rios sees the return of two of the biggest names in rock, Glen
Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner together on one stage. The crowd who are let’s
just say are more mature age gather in anticipation for the start of the
gig. I couldn’t help but sense that the majority of the audience have come
to see Mr. Hughes perform other than the entity that is HTP, of which we
hear very little from the two albums they have released.
The set kicks off with ‘Hold On’ and this soon has the crowd in the mood
for more. ‘Cant Stop Rock And Roll’ and ‘Losing My Head’ are followed in
quick succession before the quite superb ‘Alone I Breathe’. Then it’s into
the classics which are what the crowd have come to hear after all.
Starting off with ‘Mistreated’ which Glenn Hughes delivers with such
feeling that it almost brings a lump to the throat. Then it’s Joe Lynn
Turners turn to get into the Rainbow tracks starting off with ‘I
Surrender’ and then ‘Street of Dreams’, both are meet with the approval of
the crowd.
Although the main body of the set is more of a self tribute to the bands
both have been in before, there were some HTP tracks included in the set.
‘Death Alley Driver’ and ‘Devils Road’ are two of these but it’s the
classic tracks that seem to be taking up more of the set than they perhaps
should.
Saying that the rendition of ‘Stormbringer’ is just phenomenal as the self
proclaimed voice of rock Hughes delivers some of the most powerful and
emotion vocals you will ever hear (this man could read a telephone
directory and make it sound melodic).
Even without concentrating on the new HTP album this was still a
worthwhile gig to attend if only from a nostalgia point of view and to see
the two of them perform rock together on one stage.
